Really chuffed...
I suspect many readers of a similar vintage to myself will have enjoyed the black and white image of the steam train at Rainhill (The Scotsman, 4 August) commemorating the last fare-paying steam train to run on British Railways.
In fact the train ran on 11 August, 1968, and called at Carlisle before returning to Liverpool. The locomotive featured in the picture is Oliver Cromwell and has been preserved. British Rail never missed a trick to turn a penny and, accordingly, there was a hike in prices for passengers on the day. The train is predictably now referred to as “the Fifteen Guinea Special”!
