Break Free

Underbelly Bristo Square (Venue 302) There’s a lot of fun to be had at this jail-break, breakdance show which takes place in a city where dancing is strictly prohibited. Our five heroes just can’t help themselves, however, and end up behind bars just for throwing down some shapes.

The over-zealous police officer who books them becomes their prison guard, and the next hour is spent with the five inmates trying to outsmart him and find a way out. Cue some comedic, slapstick capers featuring video projections – including clever visual trickery filmed in real time – and a lot of very impressive breakdancing.

While the moves are slick, the storyline is less fluid, which leaves you wondering if these talented dancers aren’t better off just sharing their expertise unfettered by a flimsy narrative.

But there are moments when skill and silliness work well, such as the champion headspinner turning at high speed while he’s wrapped in silver streamers, or the synchronised backflips that convince the guard he’s looking in a mirror.

Japan’s Wasabeats crew has a whole stash of breakdance techniques up their stripy shirts, and while they may not deploy them in the most artistic way possible, as a family outing it’ll do just fine.
