Desert Island Discs host Kirsty Young will step away from the Radio 4 show for a ‘number of months’ as she is suffering from a form of fibromyalgia. Lauren Laverne will fill in.
@laurenlaverne tweeted: “This autumn I’m going to be stepping into the biggest shoes in broadcasting for a while – to cover #Desertislanddiscs. Wishing the phenomenal Kirsty Young better very soon.”
@colinofstoney replied: “You definitely have big shoes to fill. Kirsty Young is the best of all the presenters & I’m old enough to remember them all. That being said, enjoy yourself, can’t wait to hear you.”
@willleahy commented: “People often ask who my favourite radio presenter is – this lady is certainly in my top 3 and I hope she has a speedy recovery as the world needs her back as soon as possible”
@caitlinmoran posted: “Wishing Kirsty Young the speediest recovery possible, whilst being thrilled that @laurenlaverne is now to become Queen of Desert Island Discs. Those big shoes are in safe hands.”
@bestboomer said: “As a fellow sufferer, I hope that her health improves with more rest and time to focus on her own wellbeing”
@saoirsefanclub stated: “I hope Kirsty Young coming out about her fibromyalgia will bring this debilitating illness into the mainstream because sufferers face real barriers trying to access sick benefits, it’s still considered a fake disability by many.”

Andy Murray answered his doubters with a battling performance against Fernando Verdasco at the US Open. In only his ninth match since returning from hip surgery, Murray went toe-to-toe with the 31st seed in New York, before succumbing 7-5 2-6 6-4 6-4.
@russellcfuller said: “Those 3 hours and 23 minutes reminded us just what we have been missing: flair, heart, resilience, confrontation, and oneway conversations with Jamie Delgado. Welcome back Andy Murray; very well played Fernando Verdasco.”
@russellcfuller added: “Murray thought Verdasco spoke to his coach in the locker room during the heat break – which is not allowed. Verdasco says he was making polite conversation, in Spanish, with Marcos Baghdatis’ coach.”
@ighx10 posted: “@andy_murray is a great ambassador for tennis. It is disappointing to see him lose, but I am certain he will continue to play a vital role in the equal development of the game”
