Dismay as Scotland’s Good Food bill put on ice

- By ILONA AMOS

Campaigners have hit out at the Scottish Government’s decision to mothball plans to introduce a Good Food Nation bill in the next 12 months.

The proposed bill was intended to tackle food challenges such as child poverty, obesity and environmental impacts. The new Programme for Government instead adopts a Good Food Nation programme, which will consider new laws.

Members of the Scottish Food Coalition say it’s a missed opportunity.

Pete Ritchie, director of Nourish Scotland, said: “The measure of a worldclass food system is not how much food and drink we can export but how well we can nourish all our citizenssustainablywhileproviding good jobs for all who work in food. Scotland has all the ingredients to deliver this, and the public are behind it. We just need the political will.”
