Ross opens on bright note in card attempt

- By MARTIN DEMPSTER

Craig Ross got off to a promising start in Germany on an otherwise disappointing day for the Scottish hopefuls at the start of this season’s European Tour Qualifying School.

Ross, a winner on the PGA Europro Tour earlier in the year, opened with a threeunder-par 69 in his stage-one test at Fleesensee to sit jointseventh, two off the lead held by Lauri Ruuska of Finland.

Taking place at The Players Club in Bristol, Daniel Hendry fared best out of six Scots in the other Section A event with a two-over-par 74 to sit joint-25th.

As Edinburgh-based Welshman Gareth Wright opened with a 72 to sit joint-10th, Ryan Campbell (76), Peter Whiteford (77), Louis Gaughan (79) and Jordan Mccoll (83) all made slow starts.

On the Tartan Tour, Dunbar’s Neil Fenwick carded a two-under-par 69 to lead the 36-hole Carnegie Invitational by a shot from Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) .
