Buckfast pie so popular pub considers adding it to menu permanently

- By SARAH WARD

A pub that started selling Buckfast pie as a joke is now considering adding it to its permanent menu because of its popularity.

The unusual version of steak-and-ale pie went on sale at the Kilted Kangaroo in Stirling on Friday.

But it proved a hit with customers, who wolfed down the pie, sold for £8.95 with a side of gravy, crushed new pota- toes and seasonal vegetables.

Marketing manager Charlie Macrae, 38, said he thought it was a similar idea to using red wine to cook with.

Mr Macrae said: “The butchers where we get our meat have been making it for a while. They do Buckfast sausages.

“We put it on as a special and I think it’s been a novelty. We got a supply in, we didn’t think it would be such a big thing. “Apparently it is really nice.” The meat suppliers, Rendalls Online Butcher, have made a name for themselves selling meat marinated in the tonic wine, which is made by monks in Devon.

Mr Mcrae said he believed the alcohol would have been cooked off during the process.

He added: “I don’t think it has an effect on people’s behaviour. We have not had anyone send it back to the kitchen. The boss is thinking about keeping it on the menu until Christmas, we might keep it on as a staple.”
