If the sample questions published in The Scotsman yesterday are anything to go by, it is not surprising that the P1 testing regime has been widely condemned.

It is not clear what the five examples are testing. Is it arithmetic, intelligen­ce, general knowledge or logic? One thing is clear – they all demand a level of reading ability well beyond that of most P1 pupils.
