SSE ramps up offshore wind assets for £118m

- By SCOTT REID

Perth-based power giant SSE is continuing its push into the renewable energy sector with a £118 million deal to gain full control of a major offshore wind project.

The group is taking control of the Seagreen Wind Energy venture – established to develop offshore wind schemes in the outer Firth of Forth and Firth of Tay. They have the potential capacity to supply more than 600,000 homes.

SSE already owned 50 per cent of the Seagreen joint venture and announced yesterday that it would buy the remainder from US engineering and construction firm Fluor for £118m.

Martin Pibworth, SSE’S wholesale director, said: “The Seagreen acquisition aligns with SSE’S ambition to create value from owning, operating and developing clean energy assets and infrastructure.

“SSE’S expertise in the development, construction and operation of offshore wind will be an asset to Seagreen,” he added.
