General tripe?

-

Labour needs to put their new deselection rules into practice to get rid of Laura Smith, the party’s MP for Crewe and Nantwich.

If she’s not going full diva with Comrade Corbyn over Europe, she’s parroting the Socialist Workers Party’s incessant calls for a general strike. The SWP’S obsession with general strikes is such that it has called for one every year for decades – despite the spectacular failure of the last one, in 1926.

Her antediluvian language calling to “organise our brothers in the trade unions” (quite aside from the unions not having been Labour’s puppets for two decades, they prefer the less sexist term “members” these days) is an embarrassment to modern politics, exactly the sort whose open mouth and rumbling belly could cost her party the next general election – or the country if it wins.

Labour’s Six Tests for Brexit were obviously designed to fail. However Test 2 (that all things be the same) ignores the fact that staying in the EU will also come at a cost. There has been no discussion about the terms the EU would impose on the UK, eg giving up our rebate. It is inconceivable that everything that has happened would just be ignored. Labour’s Six Tests would fail if we decided to stay in the EU.
