Celtic go top as Hibernian held to a draw

-

Celtic are top of SBS SWPL1 following a 4-0 win over Forfar Farmington, but the opening day of the season was overshadowed by a sudden bereavement at Glasgow City which caused the defending champions’ game at Rangers to be postponed.

Hibernian, who pushed City all the way last season, were held to a 0-0 draw by Edinburgh rivals Spartans, while, in the third top-flight game, newly promoted Motherwell beat Stirling University 1-0.

Celtic manager Eddie Wolecki Black claimed that his former Hibs striker Sarah Ewens could score 30 goals this season – and she took just three minutes to score her first.

Josephine Giard and Natalie Ross made it three at half-time, with Ross getting the pick of the bunch early in the second half.

“We had a good pre-season at the Potsdam tournament in Germany and it gave some of the girls a wake-up call to see what the standard is outwith Scotland,” right back Emma Black said “We’ve really been pushing it hard in training and this was a good win and performance.”

Hibs were disappointed to open their campaign with a draw, but Spartans keeper Rachel Harrison had an inspired game.

Captain Kerry Montgomery scored Motherwell’s firstever SWPL1 goal just after the hour to give her side the ideal start to the campaign.
