Cure by calendar
As reported by Brian Ferguson (Scotsman, 8 October), the STA’S proposed ‘radical rethink’ of how tourism in Scotland impacts communities and the environment is welcome. In Edinburgh, the problem is most acute during August, where the influx of Tattoo visitors and Festivalgoers gridlock the city. The pressure could be eased by the simple expedient of moving the Tattoo to earlier in the year (May or June). Spacing the two major events would not impact significantly on overall visitor numbers and afford long-suffering locals welcome breathing space in the busiest month.
