Ban on buses and lorries in UK fitting old tyres

- By ELEANOR BARLOW

Lorries, buses and coaches in the UK are to be banned from using tyres more than ten years old following a campaign by the mother of a teenager killed in a crash.

Frances Molloy has been campaigning for a change in the law since the death of her son, Michael, 18, in a coach crash as he travelled home to Liverpool from Bestival on the Isle of Wight in 2012.

An inquest into the crash, which also killed Kerry Ogden, 23, and coach driver Colin Daulby, 53, found it was caused by a tyre that was nearly 20 years old.

Yesterday, UK roads minister Baroness Vere announced that it would be made illegal to fit tyres that are more than ten years old to the front wheels of lorries, buses and coaches, and to all wheels of minibuses. A Department of Transport spokesman said the secondary legislation would be laid in the autumn.
