Making the grade
Another day, another whingeing teenager bemoaning the fact that they had not secured the grades to which their hard work “entitled” them.
This attitude presupposes that the harder a student works, the higher the grades which should be awarded. What they fail to take account of is that examiners are also required to assess academic ability.
I know from personal experience that hard work doesn’t always guarantee exam success, because not all students have the same level of intelligence. Of course we should sympathise with and support those who have clearly been unreasonably treated, but a bit of balance in reporting wouldn’t go amiss.
