Just have faith

-

As well as lacking any vision for Scotland’s future, people like Douglas Cowe (Letters 18 August) fail to acknowledge that Scotland has vast natural resources with a balance of trade surplus plus a highly educated population which, with the right economic policies, would put an independent Scotland on a par with our prosperous Scandinavian neighbours.

These all have a much higher GDP per head compared to this part of North Britain and the UK has run a deficit for three centuries, often at well over 100 per cent of GDP.

Several small European countries have established their own central bank and currency without damaging their economy and it will be up to the government of the day to decide which solution is best for Scotland. The same applies to whether we should join EFTA or the European Union. It’s called democracy and Mr Cowe will have a say.

At present, we have a democratic deficit as we are regularly ruled from Westminster by a party with minimal support in Scotland and our vote to remain in the EU was completely ignored by Westminster, which has used Brexit to grab powers from Holyrood. This is a breach of the Scotland Act and illustrates we have less influence in the British Union when compared to small independent nations in the EU.
