Shiite Muslim worshipper­s gather to commemorat­e the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Imam Hussein, during the Islamic month of Muharram in Iraq’s holy city of Najaf. Ashura is a period of mourning in remembranc­e of the seventh-century martyrdom of Imam Hussein, who was killed in the battle of Karbala in modern-day Iraq, in 680 AD. Thousands of tearful pilgrims wearing gloves and masks have flooded Iraq’s holy city ofKa rb al atom ark the day, in one of the largest Muslim gatherings since the C ovid -19 pandemic began. Typically, millions come from around the world for the event.
