Work to start to reopen railway at Stonehaven
Work to reopen the railway at Stonehaven is to star t this week after a fatal train derailment on the line.
AS co trail service came off the tracks after hitting a land slip on 12 August, resulting in the deaths of three people – driver Brett MCCullough, con duct or Donald Din ni ea nd passenger Christopher Stuchbury. A 600-tonne crawler crane will be used to lift the derailed carriages from the rail line later this week.
Net work R ail and contractors have been preparing the site for recover y. This has included building a new 900m road, as well as temporary bridges over the line, to allow the specialist equipment to the site.
The recover y of the carriages is expected to take several days.
Transport secretary Michael Matheson visited the site yesterday.
