Work to start to re­open rail­way at Stone­haven

Work to re­open the rail­way at Stone­haven is to star t this week after a fatal train de­rail­ment on the line.

AS co trail ser­vice came off the tracks after hit­ting a land slip on 12 Au­gust, re­sult­ing in the deaths of three peo­ple – driver Brett MCCul­lough, con duct or Don­ald Din ni ea nd pas­sen­ger Christo­pher Stuch­bury. A 600-tonne crawler crane will be used to lift the de­railed car­riages from the rail line later this week.

Net work R ail and con­trac­tors have been pre­par­ing the site for re­cover y. This has in­cluded build­ing a new 900m road, as well as tem­po­rary bridges over the line, to al­low the spe­cial­ist equip­ment to the site.

The re­cover y of the car­riages is ex­pected to take sev­eral days.

Trans­port sec­re­tary Michael Mathe­son vis­ited the site yes­ter­day.
