- By LUCINDA CAMERON

Author and TV presenter Cat Cubie is urging people to take par tina cancer support charity’ s World’ s Biggest Coffee Morning as it faces a dramatic drop in income due to coronavirus.

Macmillan Cancer Support is hoping people will get creative about how they take part this year by holding virtual coffee mornings or signing up for its new Coffee Morning Challenge to raise funds by taking on a personal challenge with a run, walk or cycle.

Although Friday Sept ember 25 is the official day of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, events can be held at any time. Cat Cubie and her children Roar, three, and Indy, five, held an early outdoor coffee morning and urged others to organise their own.

She said: “I urge everyone to get involved with Macmillan’s fundraising this month. You can still have your own wee coffee morning, eat all the cakes, then get on your bikes and do a challenge.

“This year has been devastating, not just because of the impact of Covid-19 but what it has meant for cancer patients.

“A diagnosis is always so scar y and can feel lonely, but experiencing it through this pandemic has been really isolating for many.

“I have a personal connection to Macmillan and have taken par t in the Big Coffee Morning for years, but sup - porting them in 2020 is more important than ever.”

Macmillan said it funds hundreds of nurses, support workers, benefits advisers and other vital roles across the NHS and social care system in Scotland and provides a support line that offers expert advice from cancer nurses, welfare rights and money specialists.

Each year Macmillan also gives out around £2 million in grants to people with cancer in Scotland to help them with everything from paying their rent to covering transport costs to and from treatment.

Janice Preston, Mac millan’s head of services in Scotland, said :“Right nowpeople with cancer need Macmillan’s support more than ever before.“we want to be there for everyone who needs us but we rely on donations for almost all of our income.”
