Driving slower will cost more

-

THE introduction of 20mph limits would see drivers face a rise in the cost of their daily commute.

According to the AA, an average car that does 55.6 miles to the gallon at 30mph will do only 49.1 at 20mph. As a result, a typical ten-mile drive to work would cost an extra 12p in petrol, from 90p to £1.02.

Neil Greig, director of policy at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said: ‘Most modern cars can cope with 20mph in third gear but that’s not the most efficient. The most efficient speed is 50mph. So there will be more fuel consumption.’

A 20mph limit is also likely to lead to higher emissions.
