Slick Saints leave Moyes’ men rock bottom

-

MANOLO GABBIADINI scored twice as Southampton thrashed Sunderland 4-0 to leave David Moyes’ side still rooted to the bottom of the English Premier League.

Sunderland had won 4-0 at Crystal Palace last weekend but it was back to square one after losing at home by the same scoreline.

Gabbiadini netted a firsthalf double before Jason Denayer’s own goal two minutes from time and Shane Long’s strike in stoppage time completed the rout.

Moyes said: ‘We didn’t play well, not as well as last week. We made some defensive mistakes. We had a great chance to maybe move out of the bottom three but it didn’t fall for us.’

Southampton manager Claude Puel was thrilled with his side’s display.

‘We showed a very good spirit and attitude in a difficult game, he said.

‘A good team performance, showing plenty of confidence and quality.

‘Manolo Gabbiadini is a technical player of quality who can finish well.

‘It’s great for us, and as a team it’s now important to continue this work.’

Elsewhere, West Brom equalised at the death to clinch a 2-2 draw away to West Ham. Nacer Chadli opened the scoring but Sofiane Feghouli and Manuel Lanzini turned things round for the Hammers. Gareth McAuley’s 94th-minute header salvaged a point for the Baggies.

Joe Allen’s goal was enough for Stoke to beat Crystal Palace 1-0.

The Welshman struck midway into the second half in a cagey game that leaves Palace in the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Everton were held to a goalless draw away to Middlesbrough.
