The day Dave quit... and how it turned into a hair-raising nightmare for Sam and the kids

-

AS HER husband was enduring the hardest moment of his political career – resigning as Prime Minister after losing the Brexit vote – Samantha Cameron was having an issue of her own... with her ‘fine’ billowy hair.

Recalling the moment she stood with their three children – Nancy, 13, Elwen, 11, and Florence, six – outside No10 as her husband gave his farewell speech, Mrs Cameron admitted: ‘You are trying not to pick your nose and you are thinking of something else.

‘I ended up looking at the pictures and thinking I have really fine hair. Any hint of wind and it’s standing on end.’

She said the most difficult part of leaving was trying to find clothes for all the family for the final photocall as they had to move from No 10 so quickly. ‘That’s the difference between me and everyone else moving house,’ she said.

‘Nancy and Florence only seemed to have school uniform, so I had to find them dresses. It was July and we went to Zara, but everything was sold out.’ She admitted her fears about the way she looked during public appearances might appear ‘lightweight’, but added: ‘If you get it wrong there tends to be a bombardment of criticism, so you have to try to do it well.’

Mrs Cameron, 45, told how she thinks ‘all the time’ about her late son Ivan, the couple’s first child who suffered from a rare form of epilepsy and cerebral palsy and died in 2009, shortly before his seventh birthday.

She told The Times Magazine: ‘Ive dying is such a massive thing that everything else is irrelevant.’ She adds: ‘I still have four children and I think about him the whole time.’

The former PM’s wife also revealed that her experience has left her sympathetic towards the US’s new First Lady, Melania Trump.

She said: ‘I watch Melania and think it must be so stressful deciding what to wear and making sure your hair isn’t going to do something weird.’
