Murphy set for surprise Scots call

- By Graeme Croser

BRIGHTON forward Jamie Murphy is in line for a shock Scotland call-up ahead of the World Cup qualifier against England.

National coach Gordon Strachan will tomorrow name an enlarged pool for the June 10 clash and uncapped Murphy is set to be drafted in on the back of a campaign in which he has helped Brighton gain promotion to the Premier League.

Leigh Griffiths, Chris Martin and Steven Fletcher are all in contention for the Hampden clash next month but Murphy, 27, will be included to bolster the team’s attacking options.

He played 40 times for Chris Hughton this season, finding the net four times.

Murphy started his career at Motherwell before moving to Sheffield United in 2015 and previously won 13 Under-21 caps. He was called up for a friendly against Denmark in March 2016 but was an unused substitute in the 1-0 victory.

Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney is set to keep his place in the pool after making his debut against Canada in March, but Celtic’s Callum McGregor is likely to miss out despite emerging as a key player for Brendan Rodgers in the second half of the season.
