Good riddance to Mrs May’s arrogant aides
As a loyal Conservative for many years, I am delighted that Theresa May’s unelected advisers Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill resigned. They were responsible for producing the worst manifesto the party has ever published. Their cardinal sin was their arrogant failure to listen, particularly to loyal older party members. Roger Thomas, Heathfield, East Sussex What idiots thought the Conservative manifesto should contain policies bound to alienate its core supporters and send the wrong message to possible new voters? Theresa May is the cause of the chaos we are now in and she has handed thousands of people on a plate to Jeremy Corbyn. Brian Galpin, Poole, Dorset As a floating voter, I was fully prepared to vote for Theresa May’s party, as they seemed strong on Brexit. However, when they published their manifesto, I became alarmed. They were going to do away with the triple lock on pensions and were going to end the winter fuel allowance for most. I reasoned that my bus pass and forthcoming free TV licence would probably go the same way. I’m angry that another Prime Minister appears to have been influenced by out-of-touch advisers. Eric Richardson, Ottery St Mary, Devon A few years ago I was campaigning in a predominantly Conservative constituency for a Liberal candidate. Again and again I heard how dissatisfied the voters were with the current Tory government, and when I asked if they would consider voting Liberal the response was: ‘Oh no, we have always voted Conservative.’
This loyalty to a party, right or wrong, has now been replaced by an educated and informed electorate who look at the manifesto of a party and decide accordingly, especially our young, who are concerned with the larger humanitarian issues. Long may this continue. Jehangir Sarosh, Bushey, Hertfordshire Corbyn was clear with his policies, made no apologies for adhering to socialist views, never personally attacked opponents and answered questions more directly than the usual slippery MP. If only conservative people like me had a candidate who was truly conservative; demonstrably enforcing the law, incentivising stable family units, acknowledging the social impact arising from mass immigration. We need a conservative with conviction. Aaron Crawford, York
