Diver dies at Scapa wreck

A DIVER has died af­ter get­ting into trou­ble off Orkney.

The man was pulled from the sea at Scapa Flow af­ter a may­day to ves­sels in the area on Fri­day af­ter­noon.

A coast­guard paramedic winched onto the RNLI res­cue boat con­firmed his death.

The vic­tim, who has not yet been named, had been ex­plor­ing a wreck north east of Cava Light­house.

The alarm was raised at 4pm when his boat re­ported him 15 min­utes over­due.

A lifeboat from nearby Longhope and a res­cue he­li­copter from Sum­burgh, Shet­land, at­tended. An RNLI spokesman said: ‘The diver was treated with re­spect and dig­nity and taken to Strom­ness.

‘RNLI Longhope would like to of­fer their con­do­lences and deep­est sym­pa­thy to his fam­ily, friends and loved ones.’
