when break­fast on a train was a feast and a treat, mirac­u­lously per­fect eggs, ba­con and toast pre­pared in a tiny gal­ley and served with im­mac­u­late style on linen table­cloths. It’s gone for ever, and peo­ple have to bring their own. But could they please not be like my neigh­bour on the Cam­bridge to London express the other day, and eat hor­ri­ble ve­gan snacks which fill the whole car­riage with the aroma of pick­led cab­bage stewed in Mar­mite?
