SNP could hand Sinn Fein power

THErESa May’s deputy has warned the SNP’s Brexit de­mands would give Sinn Fein un­prece­dented power over UK laws and trade.

David Lid­ing­ton has said it was a ‘mis­take’ to of­fer the Ir­ish repub­li­cans a veto over vi­tal poli­cies af­fect­ing jobs and lives across the UK.

He also warned the SNP against us­ing the Brexit row to de­mand a sec­ond in­de­pen­dence ref­er­en­dum, sig­nalling No10 would block an­other SNP re­quest.

Ni­cola Stur­geon has de­manded a Brexit veto in 24 pol­icy ar­eas but the UK Gov­ern­ment has warned that would ap­ply also to North­ern Ire­land and Sinn Fein if power-shar­ing re­sumes at Stor­mont. Mr Lid­ing­ton said: ‘That is just not a sen­si­ble way to pro­ceed.’
