IN 2010, Gateshead Council spent £350,000 on the Clasper Village playground.
But when the council announced plans shortly afterwards to knock down the neighbouring housing estate, the playground fell into such a state of disrepair that, eight years on, the council deems it too dangerous for use and it has been fenced off.
But while they were happy to splash £700,000 on a barely used car park, council officials did not fork out the estimated £20,000 to restore the park. A spokesman said: ‘We simply ran out of funding to maintain the park at a safe level.’
