From a lesser-known Bur­gundy ap­pel­la­tion, this is dry, crisp and fruity, with notes of pear and aca­cia. A lovely match for smoked fish and herby dress­ings.

Spicy food calls for some­thing lighter in al­co­hol terms. This Ger­man red fits the bill – medium-bod­ied, with a firm acid struc­ture but plenty of soft cherry notes for easy drink­ing.

RICE PUD­DING WITH POACHED PRUNES Gos­nells Lon­don Mead, £3.30 for 330ml

Some­thing re­ally dif­fer­ent for dessert. Cit­rus blos­som honey lends a del­i­cate, flo­ral sweet­ness to this Lon­don-brewed mead – de­li­cious along­side sweet, aro­matic pud­dings.
