The Simple Things - - ESCAPE | OUTING -

In HE Bates’ 1958 novella The Darling Buds of May, strawberry fields are the setting for flirtation and fisticuffs…

Pauline Jackson tries it on with the Inland Revenue’s Cedric Charlton, who is staying with the Larkin family while attempting to get to the bottom of Pop’s tax affairs and has, in the meantime, attracted the attention of daughter Mariette, with whom he’s also fallen in love. In the early 90s ITV adaptation, Mariette, played by a very young Catherine Zeta-Jones, and her nemesis, Pauline, end up fighting among the soft fruit with Ma (Pam Ferris) among the crowd of spectators cheering on her daughter.
