Two bare feet, Winchester, Hampshire

What could make the seasonal spirits, and heart rate, rise more than a whizz – or a gentle totter – around an ice rink? What Britain lacks in frozen lakes, it makes up for in beautiful settings – such as at Winchester, where its annual ice rink is set in the grounds of the cathedral (on until 7 January).

Obligatory après-skate hot chocolate or mulled wine later and it’s just a short walk to ‘Two bare feet’, via the historic high street ( great for Christmas shopping, if you’ve still the energy). This apartment is across the courtyard from – and run by the same people – as Hannah’s B&B.

The name sums up its relaxed feel, the kind of place you’d want to gather friends for a get-together and you can book the whole of the building, which sleeps up to nine, or each of the three bedrooms. The shared area has space to collapse on the squishy sofa in front of the fire or to cook up a feast in the open kitchen, with basics such as milk, butter and eggs provided and, when comes the time to retreat, the bedrooms are their own little worlds, decorated with rich materials and Moroccaninspired colours. King-size beds, walk-in showers and treaty toiletries have been slotted in, Tardis-style, over two levels. If you fancy nesting in for the rest of winter, we wouldn’t blame you…
