Now un­der­way, the an­nual red deer rut, in which males com­pete for a mate, is one of Bri­tain’s most dra­matic wildlife spec­ta­cles. Ex­moor Na­tional Park, Gal­loway For­est Park and Foun­tains Abbey all have size­able herds, as does Jura, where deer out­num­ber hu­mans by 30 to 1.
