Airport to be named after football star
FOOTBALLER Cristiano Ronaldo is to have an airport named after him.
The international hub near Funchal on his home island of Madeira will change its name from Santa Catarina Airport to Cristiano Ronaldo Airport.
The announcement was made by the regional government president Miguel Albuquerque, the same day the Real Madrid star interrupted a holiday in Ibiza to jet to Funchal and officially open a hotel.
The move to rename the airport was formalised after a regional government cabinet meeting.
Mr Albuquerque described it as a “tribute” to the footballer, who earlier this month helped his country to Euro 2016 glory in France.
