1985

-

AS for the worst summer, 1985 takes some beating.

Over June, July and August, the country was deluged with 455 mm of rain – three times as much as 1976.

The year also holds the record for lowest summer temperatures in the last 40 years and was one of the worst years for sunshine.

The start of Wimbledon was delayed as thunderstorms brought deluges and lightning strikes.

Farmers in Scotland faced ruin as crops rotted in flooded fields while it rained every day in Royal Deeside for more than two months, as Charles and Di found to their cost.

And 600 Girl Guides had to be evacuated from their campsite at Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, as torrential rain threatened to wash their tents away.
