Now it’s Pippa’s turn to be a princess, no one will be happier than Kate

-

I BET nobody is happier for Pippa Middleton – who got engaged last week to her millionaire boyfriend James Matthews – than her sister Kate.

With a stonking platinum and diamond ring on her finger valued at £250,000, Pippa is home and dry with the man she loves and that is bound to be a bonus for Kate.

The two sisters are very close and spend a lot of time together.

Bridesmaid Pippa was the unexpected star of Prince William and Kate’s wedding and has subsequently become something of a celebrity.

But now it’s Kate’s turn to help her sister plan her wedding. Chances are Prince George and Princess Charlotte may get starring roles as a pageboy and flower girl.

I’ve always been intrigued by the relationship of sisters. I don’t have one but on my wedding day I inherited five sisters-in-law.

Over the years they have become my friends, confidantes, babysitters and support system. But what intrigues me about these five women is the way they all have a different view of their childhood.

One claims she was the one who had to hurry back from school to look after the little ones until their mum came home from work. Another insists she was the one who had to peel the potatoes most nights. Her older sister says it was her who was potato peeler-in-chief.

The clever one who went to college had a beautiful dress bought for her end-of-term ball while another one remembers having to wear hand-me-down clothes. It fascinates me how their memories of their home life differ. Some childhood resentments still exist.

“Oh, she was the spoiled one,” they will say of one sister. “She was always the favourite.”

And yet whenever one of them needs a bit of help, they are immediately there for each other and understand what is required almost without asking. I envy sisters their relationship. Yet some of my friends tell me they don’t have a close bond with their sister. They’ve drifted apart and don’t understand quite why that happened.

But for Kate and Pippa that thankfully isn’t the case. They share the same love of sport, enjoy shopping, having lunch together and just hanging out with one another.

I do think their parents have played a big part in creating that strong sense of the importance of family. So all credit to them for that. And, as mother of the bride, Carole Middleton will be in her element planning yet another wedding.

Daughter Kate may have bagged a prince, but on her special day they will make sure that her beloved little sister Pippa looks and feels every inch a princess.
