“In 1969 we premiered Easy Rider. The studio, Columbia, planned to quietly release the controversial film, so they were concerned when we put it on at the 3000-seat Playhouse.

“I think they were worried it wouldn’t have an audience but their fears were allayed when a long queue of Hell’s Angels lined up round the Playhouse and to the Balmoral Hotel. Star Peter Fonda attended.”
