Rapid growth for maritime industries
THE glory days of shipbuilding on the Clyde are far from what they once were, but the maritime sector in Scotland is booming again.
The Scottish Maritime Cluster was formally launched this week and a report released on Friday revealed massive growth over the last five years.
The report found that the Scottish maritime industries have experienced rapid growth in turnover, employment and productivity despite plunging oil prices. The industry turnover grew by 21% – totalling an annual £17.5bn – and there are now 130,000 maritime workers, up 3.6% in the same five-year period.
Patrick Carnie, strategy director at Babcock International, said the Scottish sector is likely to continue to grow.
He said: “No one in Scotland lives more than 45 miles from the sea, so our rich maritime history and thriving maritime sector should come as no surprise.”
