The State

The Sunday Post (Inverness) - - IN10 -

What drives someone to leave Britain to join ISIS?

That’s the question at the heart of this new drama series, which may tell a fictional story, but is based on extensive research.

Shown over four consecutive evenings, it follows four British men and women who make the trip to Syria, including Jalal, whose adolescence has been shaped by his older brother’s “martyrdom” and who persuades his friend Ziyaad to join him in following in his sibling’s footsteps.

Meanwhile, single mother and doctor Shakira wants to put her medical skills at the service of the Islamic State, and teenage Ushna is keen to fulfil what she sees as her religious duty.

In the opening episode, the men initially enjoy the camaraderie as they begin training, while the women are taught strict rules they must obey.
