What’s the story of Song 2 by Blur? – E.

Little did Britpop’s high-flyers expect their throwaway lampooning of American mosher music to become a monster hit across the pond.

Only two minutes, four seconds long, featuring a distorted bass guitar and inane “woo-hoo” chorus, Song 2 was initially thought too lightweight to be included on Blur’s eponymously-titled 1997 LP.

“Brainless rocking out” was bassist Alex James’s assessment.

Yet Song 2 reached No 6 in the US alternative rock chart, became a sports stadium anthem and was even chosen as the title music for the hit football video game, Fifa 98.
