Scot­tish drama is the envy of Europe

Rona Munro is cur­rently hard at work on a se­quel to The James Plays, her ac­claimed tril­ogy about King James I, II and III. “Whether any­one wants any more re­mains to be seen,” she smiled. “Hope­fully I’ll get some in­ter­est from the­atres wish­ing to put them on.

“I feel it’s im­por­tant we make Scot­tish plays for Scot­tish au­di­ences but then that lim­its the amount of money that be­comes avail­able for a pro­duc­tion.

“But if you write a play about Scot­tish char­ac­ters or in Scots or about Scot­land, au­di­ences here will turn out to see it, and that is the envy of a lot of peo­ple in Europe and even Eng­land. “I think we can be enor­mously proud of the theatre scene in Scot­land but it’s suc­cess is de­pen­dent on fund­ing.”
