Freya’s hoop dream comes true as she’s picked for Scotland

-

A BASKETBALL-MAD family are celebrating after their youngest member was picked to represent Scotland.

Freya Schoffield has been bouncing a ball since she could stand thanks to the fact her older brothers had already taken up the sport.

And the 13-year-old has proven just as formidable as brothers Lewis, 22, and Ben, 16.

The call-up comes as a result of mum Kirsty and dad Stuart’s dedication to the sport. Despite having no interest in basketball themselves the proud parents spend every single day taking one of their three-strong brood to training or games.

And they don’t even get a break from the sport at home as their hoopobsessed kids watch endless hours of NBA games on TV.

Stuart, 42, said he and Kirsty, 45, could not be prouder.

He said: “Freya’s been playing with a basketball as long as we can remember

as we’ve always gone to games as a family.

“She started playing with a team when she was eight.”

Freya, from Paisley, will be part of the Scotland’s under-15 national squad and will travel to Barcelona for the Euro Basketball Cup.

Freya, who plays in point guard position for St Mirren West College Scotland, said she has her brothers to thank for her skills.

And when asked who is the best player in the house she said: “Me, because my brothers have improved me.”

Playing for the national team means Freya will benefit from the very best coaching, as well as speed and agility training.

And the family is in talks with gluten-free food company Juvela who are interested in sponsoring her because Freya has coeliac disease.

The condition means she has to avoid glutenrich foods.
