Comedian Jack Whitehall is used to being called posh – it’s an image he played on in his role as student JP in Fresh Meat. He’s also got extensive experience of portraying a teacher in the sitcom Bad Education and its big-screen spin-off.

So really, who else could the BBC get to play Paul Pennyfeather, the unfairly disgraced student-turned-teacher in this star-studded adaption of Evelyn Waugh’s 1928 novel Decline and Fall?

It’s attracted an impressive supporting cast, including David Suchet, Douglas Hodge and former Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria.

As the series begins, Paul doesn’t realise quite what he’s letting himself in for when he agrees to tutor the son of Margot Beste-Chetwynde (Longoria) over the summer months.
