ICT players ‘must get nastier’

A DISTRAUGHT Iain Vigurs sifted through the wreckage of Friday night’s Highland derby disaster and admitted there were too many nice guys in the Inverness Caley Thistle dressing room.

The Caley Thistle midfielder, visibly distressed after the 4-0 thrashing in Dingwall, admits he would now settle for a crack at the relegation play-off were he offered it with four matches left to play.

A 12-year spell in the top flight, broken only by one year in the old First Division, is now a serious proposition for a Caley Thistle team cut adrift at the foot of the table with only four wins all season.

Vigurs, in his second spell in Inverness, is also a former County midfielder and felt the pain of defeat acutely.

He said: “County wanted it and came for a fight – we didn’t.

“There were too many nice guys and you can’t have that in a relegation fight.

“You need nasty *******s on that pitch. You need to win your individual battles, you need to be streetwise, win free-kicks – even, so to speak, con the referee.

“It hurts. That’s the worst I’ve felt after a game.

“Four-nil in a derby is just not good enough, especially when you’re at the bottom of the table, fighting for everything.

“You need to go out and give everything and I can’t say that any of us did, including myself.”

Vigurs believes the only salvation for Inverness now would come from four straight victories in their final matches.

He added: “I don’t believe the boys have given up – I don’t believe that at all. I just believe we weren’t at it tonight and the boys know that themselves.

“In Dingwall, we just weren’t at the races – simple as.

“But I still believe we can get out of this and wouldn’t be playing otherwise.

“Right now, a play-off spot is what we’re aiming for. We’ll take anything we can get right now. Four wins is a must for us.

“Every single one of us in that changing room will hold our hands up and say it’s not been good enough this season.”
