Preventative measure plan
THE Scottish Government has vowed to close the safety loophole between the rich and poor.
Last week we revealed a two-tier legal system existed in the way authorities treated fire safety across the country.
While private landlords face a barrage of safety checks, local councils and housing associations are not even required to provide smoke alarms.
But the Scottish Government say they are determined to provide a level playing field for private and social landlords.
A spokesperson said: “Work to develop a common standard of housing quality is under way and we plan to consult on a minimum standard for fire and smoke detectors this year.
“Our ministerial working group will examine other preventative measures we can take.”
