Icy Marlene was so cold

IT happened to screen legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford – and now another star from Hollywood’s Golden Age has been attacked by her child.

Marlene Dietrich’s daughter Maria Riva has written a book revealing her mother as an icy egotist who went out of her way to suppress any feelings of warmth.

Marlene was complicated, but she was a trailblazer. We all accept women wearing trousers these days, but she caused a scandal by wearing “men’s clothes” in the 1930s.

The most iconic image of her was when she dressed in a top hat and tails for The Blue Angel, the movie that made her a star.

She had a voracious sexual appetite and her daughter lists many of her affairs with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Yul Brynner, Maurice Chevalier and JFK.

Shockingly, she was also deeply racist and wouldn’t allow black nurses to treat her when she was in hospital – appalling behaviour.

The book reads like an act of revenge by a daughter who was never shown much love.
