John Mackenzie, 65, from Dunvegan, Skye, needed a new pull-cord for his chainsaw. Parkerbrand, a company based in Lincoln, quoted £16.

But because of his address, the £2.99 postage was replaced with a £13.99 delivery charge.

“You could get the part into an A4 jiffy bag and send it normal postage,” he said.

“I’ve come up against this before but when you explain we’re an island but we have a road bridge, common sense usually prevails. This time it didn’t.”
