Midwife role didn’t help Helen be a mum

-

Call the Midwife star Helen George has revealed that being in the hit show did not prepare her for motherhood.

The actress, who plays Trixie Franklin in the BBC period drama, said when she joined the series she even had to learn how to look confident while holding a baby.

“I hadn’t a clue how to hold them, which was terrifying – some of the babies are only a few weeks old,” she said.

Helen became pregnant while filming the seventh series of Midwife.

In pregnancy, she suffered from ICP, a liver disorder that causes a build-up of acid, and her baby daughter was delivered three weeks early.

But she said her fictional midwife role was little help in dealing with real-life parenthood.

“Not a bit,” she said. “Nothing prepares you for all the feeding, the lack of sleep, the endless washing and sterilising.”

Helen said the highlight of this year was when she was invited to Buckingham Palace to sing as part of the VE Day 75th anniversary celebrations in May.

She said: “For the first house I could visit, outside my own, to be the Queen’s was really quite exciting.”

Helen , 36, should have been filming the 10th series of Call The Midwife but production is on hold.
