I’m just getting on with life
Kate decided on a career in TV when she was travelling in Africa, but she had no desire to be in front of the cameras.
In the late ’90s she landed a job as a researcher with the BBC’s The Holiday Programme.
On her second day, she was asked if she had ever presented. Her response was “No – nor do I want to.” But despite herself Kate turned out to be a natural. She’s been fronting programmes for more than two decades, and also pens articles and books – her latest, A Year Of Living Simply, is out in September.
After leaving London in 2007 for their fouracre small holding in Wales, the couple decided to take on a 117-acre tenanted working farm nearby. They turned it into Humble By Nature, a farm and rural skills school where people can reconnect with the land.
As lockdown eases, she says: “I am just getting on with my life and my community and doing what I can to support the people around me and local businesses. What I hope comes out of this is that people realise how important their immediate world is – the people trying to make a living, be it little local shops, farmers, carers.
“Those are the people who have had to step up and I hope we don’t forget that.”
