PSG attempt to sign £166m Mbappe in doubt over FFP
Paris St-Germain are attempting to negotiate a deal to sign Kylian Mbappe before the transfer window closes this week – but Monaco would still prefer to sell him to Real Madrid.
A fee of £166.4million has been fixed for the striker, 18, who has set his heart on joining PSG, the club he supported as he grew up in Paris. Mbappe is refusing to sign a new deal with Monaco, who had hoped to keep him for one more year.
However, no deal has yet been agreed with PSG who, up until the last few days, thought it would simply not be possible to sign Mbappe and comply with the demands of Financial Fair Play during this window. That may still be the case, but they are desperately exploring all possibilities with a source describing negotiations as “very slow”.
Monaco, meanwhile, believe that Real Madrid are prepared to pay the fee for Mbappe, who has not yet played for the French champions this season as he hopes to leave the club. His desperation to go has become a factor.
Real Madrid had made an initial offer this summer, but had appeared likely to wait for Mbappe, believing he would stay at Monaco, but have since returned with an improved bid given his determination to leave. PSG, therefore, remain Mbappe’s most likely destination.
However, following the world-record signing of Neymar for £198million, PSG are aware they will struggle to comply with FFP unless they balance their books. They need to bring in more than £90million of sales before the end of this month, with the possibility of Angel Di Maria, one of their big-name players, being sold. They want to keep Julian Draxler but there is interest in the German international. Blaise Matuidi has been sold to Juventus for an initial £18million and PSG have agreed a deal for Serge Aurier to go to Tottenham Hotspur for £23million, but other sales are needed.
How PSG would be able to structure a huge deal to sign Mbappe on top of that remains to be seen. It is understood the club are prepared to offer players to Monaco, who have expressed an interest in the Brazilian winger Lucas Moura. However, Lucas does not want to leave PSG and there is an added complication in that he is good friends with Neymar.
One surprising possibility which has been raised is for PSG to sign Mbappe but pay Monaco later although that is unlikely to be agreed. PSG started this

summer with a wishlist of Neymar, Mbappe and Alexis Sanchez – in that order – and hoped to sign one before the window closes.
They thought the most likely deal would be with Sanchez, and negotiations took place, but were able to sign their first choice in Neymar.
The belief was that the scale of the Neymar deal would prohibit a move for Mbappe but it could happen, with the French international wanting to leave Monaco this week. Mbappe is due to join the France squad tomorrow ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Holland and Luxembourg so it will be hoped his future is decided by then. Sources at both Monaco and PSG yesterday insisted that a deal to sell him had not been agreed.
