Burnley squad inquest sparks rout of ‘naive’ Bournemouth

- By Anthony Jepson at Turf Moor

Burnley manager Sean Dyche believes his side showed their true colours in hauling themselves off the foot of the Premier League.

The Lancashire club claimed their first league win of the season at the sixth time of asking with an exuberant performance which brought Bournemouth’s bright start to the campaign to a rude halt.

Dyche’s men had just a point from five outings at the start of the day, but first-half goals from Matej Vydra and Aaron Lennon and a late double from substitute Ashley Barnes saw them jump to 16th.

“We had a good chat in the week to remind ourselves what we’re all about,” said Dyche. “We don’t worry too much about what everyone thinks but that’s a good sign of what we are. That clinical edge that was lacking early season was there and the belief grows. It’s a start.”

Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side fell one place to sixth after a chastening afternoon, but their manager refused to be too disheartened by his team’s performance.

“I don’t think that 4-0 is necessarily reflective of the game,” he said. “We weren’t good around box, the final pass was missing, and we were a little bit naive in chasing the game. The third and fourth goals put a different slant on things.”

Vydra, an £11 million signing from Derby County in the summer, grabbed his first Premier League goal on his full Burnley debut in the 39th minute, the Czech striker sweeping home after Ashley Westwood twice had his shot charged down.

Lennon doubled the lead two minutes later when he got on the end of the impressive Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s deep right-wing cross to slot home at the far post.

Burnley remained on the front foot after the break and Barnes, on for Sam Vokes, was the quickest to react when Lennon’s volley inside the box struck a post in the in 83rd minute.

Lennon provided again in the 88th minute with a right-wing cross which Barnes stroked home with confidence from the edge of the box.
