Tesco Côtes du Rhône 2014, France For a southern Rhône red that works out at under £4 per bottle, this is a terrific buy. Soft and smooth with slightly spicy, peppery red berry fruit. Best of all the boxes. Co-operative Chilean Merlot 2016, Central Valley Bright, juicy red with sweetly ripe cassis and blackberry flavours. Easygoing, likeable modern red for barbecued meats, and not too strong at 12.5 per cent. Morrisons Chardonnay Box, Western Cape, South Africa Decent Cape chardonnay, dry and light, not oaky, but with a fresh pineapple streak and slightly rounded, buttery finish. Goes down very well with chicken.
