Never want to go shopping again? A clutch of cool subscription-box services is making this dream a reality

Lee Kynaston subscribes to home-delivered goodies

I defy anyone not to be excited by the prospect of Paul Smith socks popping through the letter box

It’s unfashionable for a man to admit to this in 2017, but I hate shopping. I truly do. I hate everything from navigating sharp elbows to being forced to assess my backside in a communal ‘mirror of shame’ when changing rooms lack a looking glass of their own. Nor do I particularly like shopping for grooming gear – a chore that’s both costly and time-consuming.

Luckily, there are companies out there that offer cleverly curated subscription services and bespoke online edits to sidestep the need for physical shopping. The most recent addition to this lifesaving fraternity is New York-based Harry’s, which has brought its time- (and money-) saving shaving subscription service to the UK, taking on the big-league razor brands in a display of chutzpah not seen since Leicester City snatched the Premier League title. Its flexible Shave Plans see its highperformance blades and shaving ancillaries delivered to your door for a fraction of the price you’d pay on the high street.

A VIP subscription to The Perfume Society, meanwhile, entitles you to discounts on its Men’s Edit Discovery Boxes (a great way to sample the latest smellies); and I defy anyone not to get excited by the prospect of a pair of Paul Smith socks popping through their letter box, courtesy of the designer’s sock subscription.

As for clothes, I’d recommend both The Chapar and Enclothed. co.uk for the terminally shop-shy. Both let you work with a personal shopper to create a customised collection you can try on at home before keeping what works. ‘Never shop for clothes again’ proclaims the latter company’s strapline – which is almost as appealing an offer as, ‘Please accept this lifetime’s supply of Château Margaux.’
