I defy any­one not to be ex­cited by the prospect of Paul Smith socks pop­ping through the let­ter box

It’s un­fash­ion­able for a man to ad­mit to this in 2017, but I hate shop­ping. I truly do. I hate ev­ery­thing from nav­i­gat­ing sharp el­bows to be­ing forced to as­sess my back­side in a com­mu­nal ‘mir­ror of shame’ when chang­ing rooms lack a look­ing glass of their own. Nor do I par­tic­u­larly like shop­ping for groom­ing gear – a chore that’s both costly and time-con­sum­ing.

Luck­ily, there are com­pa­nies out there that of­fer cleverly cu­rated sub­scrip­tion ser­vices and be­spoke on­line ed­its to side­step the need for phys­i­cal shop­ping. The most re­cent ad­di­tion to this life­sav­ing fra­ter­nity is New York-based Harry’s, which has brought its time- (and money-) saving shav­ing sub­scrip­tion ser­vice to the UK, tak­ing on the big-league ra­zor brands in a dis­play of chutz­pah not seen since Le­ices­ter City snatched the Premier League ti­tle. Its flex­i­ble Shave Plans see its high­per­for­mance blades and shav­ing an­cil­lar­ies de­liv­ered to your door for a frac­tion of the price you’d pay on the high street.

A VIP sub­scrip­tion to The Per­fume So­ci­ety, mean­while, en­ti­tles you to dis­counts on its Men’s Edit Dis­cov­ery Boxes (a great way to sam­ple the latest smellies); and I defy any­one not to get ex­cited by the prospect of a pair of Paul Smith socks pop­ping through their let­ter box, courtesy of the de­signer’s sock sub­scrip­tion.

As for clothes, I’d rec­om­mend both The Cha­par and En­clothed. co.uk for the ter­mi­nally shop-shy. Both let you work with a per­sonal shop­per to cre­ate a cus­tomised col­lec­tion you can try on at home be­fore keep­ing what works. ‘Never shop for clothes again’ pro­claims the lat­ter com­pany’s strapline – which is al­most as ap­peal­ing an of­fer as, ‘Please ac­cept this life­time’s sup­ply of Château Mar­gaux.’
